Smoky Mtn Trip 2010

On Wednesday of last week, I decided we needed to head to the mountains for Easter weekend. I snagged a cheap but nice hotel in Cherokee, NC, which was about a mile from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Here are a couple of pics from the Alabama Welcome Center.

On Saturday, we had reservations to go horseback riding inside the park, which was at the Smokemont Stables. The trails were just right for the kids.

That afternoon, we decided to get really crazy and go white-water rafting. We found a small place on the Nantahala River. Interesting fact is that since the river is dam fed, the water is a constant 52deg year around. We decided it was best to rent wetsuits!

Part way through the rafting trip, the guide offered to let the kids jump off a large rock called the Picnic Table. Surprisingly, both kids wanted to do it! The look on the kid's faces after then jumped into 52deg water was priceless! We were proud of them for doing it.

Sunday was our "free day," so we decided to do some hiking. We went to the Deep Creek area of the park and hiked to several waterfalls to have a picnic.

The warm weather brought out the sun-loving critters.

After a midday break, we went to another part of the park for a long hike, ~ 4 miles round trip. There was several very cool bridges over the river to cross. Some family members, who will remain nameless, weren't too happy about the bridges.

Overall, it was a great trip, and we can't wait to go back.

We got 2 puppies today for the kids' early Christmas. We found them at a shelter in Amite, LA. They are 8 week-old girls, but we are not sure what kind they are. They look to be some kind of lab mix, but a lot smaller.

Abby has the pink collar, Rosie has the blue.

Ethan has warmed up to Rosie, the rambunctious one. Emily likes Abby, the calm one.

Disney World 2009 - Day 7 (Last Day!)

We spent the last day at Magic Kingdom, and I didn't carry the camera that morning. After lunch, the kids and I went around the hotel taking pictures with the cool displays. The resort was called Pop Century, so it had all things that were popular each decade.

That afternoon, we went back to Magic Kingdom, where we ate at the Crystal Palace. All of Pooh's friends were there.

To end the trip, we stayed for the fireworks. They are truly amazing, especially considering they do it every night! I camped out for an hour to get a good spot on the 2nd floor balcony of the train station.

Disney World 2009 - Day 6

Day 6 was spend at Epcot, with the goal of finishing the kid's passports. (You buy this real looking passport, and each country you visit will stamp and fill out that country's page.)

Also, the kids decorate a mask that they take to each country, and the country stamps and decorate their mask. Each worker at the countries are from that particular country.

Disney World 2009 - Day 5

Today was the biggest day in the history of all Purser vacations! Here is a little background.

For people who stay at a Disney Resort (like we did), they have "Magic Hour" at rotating parks. Steph woke us up against all of our wills to get to Magic Kingdom an hour early. It had been a very busy week, and we were all tired. So after we get there an hour early, we noticed there was no one around. Steph talked to they guy at the gate while me and the kids were sitting down. He said that the Magic Hour was TOMORROW! ARGH! Steph poured on the sob story of how we got up early, blah, blah. She comes over to tell us the news, and we almost wring her neck! After a few minutes, the gate guy comes over and asks, "Since y'all got up so early and were the first ones here, how would y'all like to be the special family who opens the park for us?" UHHH, YES!! So the following pictures are from that adventure.

Day 4 started bright and early at Epcot.

We were first in line!

We first headed to Test Track, which turned out to be one of the kid's favorite. Notice Emily's bravery during one of the rides surprises.

We then tried out the "green" version (less intense) of Mission: Space. It was another favorite.

For lunch, we headed to Mexico!

For supper, we ate in China. Here, Emily explains the fine art of using chopsticks.

Day 3 started with our 2nd visit to Animal Kingdom. The Tree of Life is an impressive structure!

We had breakfast at one of the character restaurants, then we mostly visited the Asia section.

At the petting zoo, we saw a couple of characters.

After our siesta, we headed to Hollywood Studios.

At the animation studios, they offer quick drawing classes where they teach you how to draw a character. Ours was Stitch.

Disney World 2009 - Day 2

Our second day was spent at Magic Kingdom. We arrived before opening, so we got a good spot in line to watch the opening ceremonies.

After the opening, we headed straight for Tomorrowland. First ride was the Astro Orbiter, which turned out to be one of the kid's favorites.

Then we headed for Autopia.

And on to the Teacups.

Where Ethan started off happy enough, but he soon became a crazy man!

Next was Toontown Fair, where we rode the Barnstormer roller coaster.

After lunch and a break back at the hotel, we headed back to Magic Kingdom on the bus.

We visited the Adventureland section, where we met Jasmine. She turned out to be one of Ethan's favorite characters. :-)

That night, we ate at Cafe Mickey, where the kids met more characters. Emily enjoyed all of them.

Ethan didn't like Minnie's kiss too much.

Later that night I went back alone with the camera to take some night shots.

Day 3 coming up!

Disney World 2009 - Day 1

We started our 7-day Disney World trip at Animal Kingdom. We arrived before it opened, and Steph had the game plan all worked out. (Basically, go to all the major attractions first.)

We headed first to the Kilimanjaro Safaris ride, which turned out to be pretty cool.

We then headed for the Lion King show, which was pretty good. We felt it could have been shorter though. Why do Disney songs have to be so long?

After that, we saw the Bug's Life 3D show, which was also pretty good. Then we were off to the fair-ride section of the park, which also had a dinosaur archeological dig site.

We then went to meeting some of the characters.

We returned to the hotel after that to get some rest. We returned that evening to eat at the Rain Forest Cafe. The restaurant is immersed in a dark rain forest setting, which Ethan wasn't to crazy about! There were lightening storms, howling monkeys and roaring leopards.

We had a busy but fun first day! There was a lot we didn't see, so we'll be back.

Today I took the kids over to a lake near our house for their first fishing trip. They both had a great time, and the fish were biting well. As soon as we would cast the cricket into the water, they would bite. Unfortunately the fish where very skilled in stealing the bait. In the end, Emily caught 2, Ethan caught 3.

Smoky Mountains 2007

The annual trek to the Great Smoky Mountains occurred Easter weekend 2007, which is late for us. We usually go over Mardi Gras, so we were looking forward to Spring in the mountains. We all had a great time, and we had a few surprises.

Friday night brought a big surprise... SNOW! It was a rare April snow, so Saturday morning we headed to Cades Cove before it melted.

On Sunday, we headed toward Newfound Gap (high in the mountains at the TN/NC border), where we found a lot of fresh snow. We had a huge snowball fight that was a highlight of the trip.

A company hired me to photograph the Santa Rosa Island Triathlon this past weekend, so the family made a mini-vacation out of it.

The weather and beach was absolutely perfect. There was as sandbar that extended perhaps 50 yards into the water, so the kids were able to get out and play. We'll definitely be going back.

We also visited the Pensacola Naval Air Museum and the USS Alabama. The kids had a blast at both places.

Elvis' Hometown

A couple of weekends ago my good-ole buddy Curtis got married, so we loaded up the family and went up to Tupelo, MS, for the reception. While in Jackson to see my folks, we took the kids to the Jackson Zoo.

On the trip home, we pulled over and let the kids explore a cotton field. They got a kick out of that.

Beach Vacation 2006

We took this picture the last evening we were at Orange Beach. It was so funny seeing every other families taking pictures at the same time, all along the beach.

Emily had no fear swimming in the gulf. She has really taken to swimming.

I was able to take a quick trip out to Fort Morgan at the entrance to Mobile Bay. This is one of the casemates where the canons would fire out of the fort.

Drought in the Bayou

Wow, lots of posts lately... funny how it comes in spurts.

South Louisiana is having the worst drought on record. The bayou I drive through on the way to work (Bayou Savage on Hwy 11) is the driest I've ever seen it. On Friday, I was able to take pictures. I've include both the color and B&W versions - let me know which version you like best!

The family went to Star for Easter, and we had a great weekend. The weather was incredible. Here are the kids in their Sunday Best.

Last night was Emily's first t-ball game ever, and, of course, the camera was there to capture it. Her team's name is the Lug Nuts. Emily did awesome, with 2 solid hits and excellent base running.

Down in the Bayou

Ryan, a guy here at work, offered to take Doug and I on a true swamp tour (Thanks Ryan!), since he grew up in the bayou down south of Houma, LA. See a map/picture HERE. It was very interesting to experience the area, and to see how fishing communities live at the end of civilization. Here are some pictures I took.

There are quite a few dead trees that were once large live oaks. The disappearing wetlands cause salt water to intrude deeper inland, submerging and killing the trees.

Huge spiders like this banana spider line the edges of the canals. This one was about 3 or 4 inches long.

If anyone knows what kind of bird this is, speak up!

We saw a good many gators, but no really big ones. These were about 5 foot'ers.

Ryan called this area Alligator Alley.

If you look at the map I linked too, this area is at the bottom of the map, close to the open water.

Laziness and Open House

First, I'd like to apologize for not posting lately. What can I say... I'm a slacker!

Michoud had an open house last Saturday, so my family was finally able to see where I work. So today's pictures will be from the open house. I think Lockheed Martin did a great job... Maybe too good! The kids were exhausted before it was all over. :-)

Vacation 2005 - Orange Beach, AL

Well, we all survived our first real family vacation. Actually, It went very well - the kids had a really good time swimming and playing on the beach. The condo (Phoenix V) was very nice, and the city has done a really good job of recovering from hurricane Ivan. There was a lot of construction going on around the city, but none of it hindered our vacation. The beach was in very good condition - the only sign of the rebuilding was the many broken sea shells from where they pumped the sand. You had to watch where you walked.

Ok, enough with the chit-chat. I'll get on with what you really came to see - kid pictures!

Living Large in D'Lo

The kids and I went to MS this past weekend. While we were there, Mimi and I took the kids to D'Lo water park, which is where the "Sirens" scene in "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" was filmed. I hadn't been there in quite a few years, so it wasn't as idyllic as I had remembered, but the kids had fun.

Fort Pike and Fierce Competition

Papa, Ethan and I went to Fort Pike yesterday (5/22) while Emily and Mimi went to a skating party (I heard that Emily is already a pro skater). Fun was had by all, except for the attack of the swarming flies. I also got to use my new Russian "fisheye" lens.

I also got my highest personal score in a picture challenge, but there were so many great pictures in this challenge, I only got 19th place! The topic was "Silhouettes."

Jazz Fest

My friend and coworker Scott and I skipped out of work early last Thursday and went to Jazz Fest. We mainly went to see Nickel Creek and B.B. King. This weekend was very productive, as far as pictures go.

Enjoying Spring

What a beautiful weekend. There was a small airshow at the Slidell Airport on Saturday, so Steph and I took the kids to see, as Ethan put it, the "big airplanes". As far as airshows go, it was pretty weak, but the kids got to see some acrobatics. They even got to see a tank and to sit in a helicopter.

Busy, Busy

First off, let me say that there are no new kid pics this week. But I will reach back into the archives for a couple.

This past week has been pretty busy. Work has been especially hectic - the CEV project I am working on is really in high gear. The LEAP test is this week, so Steph is not having fun either. Instead of going to work this past weekend, I decided to stain the new fence before it turns grey. Just the outside took all afternoon Sunday. That makes me rethink the inside... maybe grey isn't so bad. :)

The animated movie "The Incredibles" came out on DVD on 3/15. The kids were excited!

I submitted some pictures to the Slidell Art League on Monday, and they will be displayed for a month. Thanks to all who helped me select the pictures. There was a shortage of submissions this month, so they are allowing more per person. So I may submit 1 or 2 more.

Birds, Grass and Spaceships

Not much has happened since last week, other than me working mucho overtime. This new project I'm working on is Lockheed's take on NASA's Crew Exploration Vehicle. More info on the project is HERE. Our vehicle looks like the 2nd from the left.

On the homefront, the kids are doing great. The weather today was perfect, so the kids had a good time on their daily walk. Ethan says, "Grass is big!".

The warmer weather is bring out the swamp wildlife. I took this while leaving work on Saturday. It is not a great shot - I want to try for a better shot soon. The swamps along my drive to work are really pretty.

Well, here goes my first blog post ever.

This will be a place that I will post kid pics, interesting (to me) articles, family news, etc. My goal is at least a weekly post. Feedback is very welcome!

Now some family news. It looks like the rest of the family has escaped Steph's flu. Amazing. Allergies are starting up, so Ethan's nose is starting to flow. Oh joy.

The kids have discovered playing in the dirt at the now-vacant lot next to our neighborhood. Here are some pics:
